El biólogo marino Pierre Aronnax y su criado Conseil, junto con el arponero Ned Land, naufragan y llegan a lo que creen una isla, pero que no es sino el submarino del capitán Nemo, que los acoge. La novela es un medio de describir el fondo del mar y la vida que en él se desarrolla, pero además de la parte científica, rigurosa, Verne especula con ciencia futura, tanto en oceanografía e ictiología, describiendo animales marinos que sólo en la actualidad se han encontrado, como en tecnología: el propio submarino Nautilus, las escafandras, etc.20.000 Leguas de Viaje Submarino es un clásico y nombres como el capitán Nemo o el submarino Nautilus son sobradamente conocidos.Ha sido adaptada al cine en varias ocasiones, a dibujos animados e incluso hay un vídeo juego basado en ella.
